The organizers of the symposium would like to feedback on symposium activities in order to improve its reach and impact. Please download the pdf evaluation form and return to Mrs. Hughley.
Introduction
The Annual Biomedical Research Symposium main goal is to highlight health issues that affect the health of living creatures, but disproportionately affect humans in the black belt county of Alabama and other areas. The eighth Annual Biomedical Research Symposium Sponsored by the College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health (CVMNAH), will be held Sept 17 - 19, 2008 at the Kellogg Conference Center and Patterson Hall. The theme selected for this year Symposium is: Health Disparity in Infectious Diseases and Cancer.
The overall strategy for advancing biomedical research, in this new century, is through trans-disciplinary teams and creative partnerships and collaborations. The symposium will provide a forum for faculty, staff, research assistants, student, invited guests and the community at large to share their views about these critical topics. Input from field workers, health providers and community leaders in direct contact with affected individuals is key to ameliorating the disproportionate health-care-assistance available to individual with infectious diseases such as AIDS, cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
Mission/Purpose
The mission of Research and Advanced Studies (ADRAS) at CVMNAH focuses upon three objectives
- To recruit, admit and graduate highly motivated students who are exposed to high quality academic programs that dedicated to the creation and advancement of new knowledge through the "one medicine- one health " concept.
- To expand and advance the knowledgebase of the biosciences by linking veterinary medicine and the agricultural and food sciences on one side and human health and welfare on the other side.
- To inculcate the commitment to public service through transnational and community-oriented biomedical research and education so as to produce a positive impact on society and the environment
Vision/Goals
To create by the end of this decade a world-class research and advanced studies enterprise with research to:
1. Advance the biosciences especially in selected areas of molecular sciences, genomics and biotechnology.
2. Build bridges across the disciplines especially with agricultural, environmental and food sciences and bio-engineering disciplines.
3. Promote the "one medicine concept" by building bridges to connect veterinary medicine with human health to address health disparities in minority populations.
4. Investigate, educate, divulge and advance professional and graduate education including the newly launched PhD program in Integrative Biosciences (IBS).
Multi-Disciplinary Teams
"Team" implies working together (as a team) for the clear purpose of succeeding to achieve the goals and objectives of Research & Advanced Studies.
"Team" also implies multidisciplinary approaches (i.e. individuals bring their areas of specialty to the table to sharpen purposes or goals.
Each member of the team will carry its respective specialty and responsibility so that the team can succeed.
We have established Teams and Team leaders for fostering an environment that supports and encourages each one of us to do better while minimizing unnecessary obstacles.
It is our hope that you will become part of our team, and join forces with us to advance approaches capable of producing measurable results in alleviating the suffering of our most vulnerable citizens.
